Does it matter how we
worship God? When speaking to the Samaritan woman Jesus said:
But the
hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship
Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit
and truth. (John 4:23-24)
Consider His words: Those who worship Him
must worship in spirit and truth. The true servant must
worship in the right 'attitude' as well as the right 'way'. Many feel
that there is not right 'way' to worship God. The Bible teaches otherwise.
We believe that communal worship is an integral and absolute element in
the Christian life. Briefly, there are several elements of worship:
- Singing-
Ephesians 5:19 teaches that Christians are to speak "to one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making
melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things
to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..."
Singing is a wonderful privilege that we must engage in with the "spirit
and the understanding". (1 Cor 14:15) There is no mention of musical
instruments used the worship service in the New Testament- and since
Christians are to keep the traditions as they have been delivered to
us (1 Cor 11:2) - we cannot add musical instuments into the worship
service.
- Giving-
1 Cor 16:2 teaches that upon the first day of the week Christians are
to lay aside for the work of the church. What a blessed honor to contribute
to the work of the Lord! Can anyone imagine any greater blessing?
- Prayer-
The scripture is replete with admonitions to pray: "without
ceasing" (1 Thess 5:17), with a "pure heart"
(2 Tim 2:22), and "with thanksgiving" (Phil 4:6). By
prayer we approach the throne of God and present our requests- who can
fully appreciate the power of a righteous man or woman on his knees?
(James 5:16)
- Teaching-
The body of Christ needs edification and strength which comes through
the public proclamation of the word. (2 Tim 2:2) The lost need to hear
the gospel plan of salvation which is not taught by angels, but by men.
(1 Cor 1:21) Importantly, despite the protestation of modern culture,
women are not allowed to teach publically (1 Cor 14:34-35, 1 Tim 2:11-12).
It is blasphemous for women to teach from the pulpit and a mark that
a church does not follow the teachings of Christ.
- Communion-
This is the most significant privilege of all. To gather around the
Lord's table every first day of the week (Acts 20:7) is a sublime responsibility
that surpasses all earthly obligations. We gather at the table of the
King to remember His death and sacrifice in our place. When Christians
do this they "proclaim the Lords death till He comes"
(1 Cor 11:26) Sleeping late or playing golf on the Lord's day is not
an option! God has sent you an invitation for a sacred meal.
