This five part series was presented by Evangelist Reggie Kinser on Let The Bible
Speak, sponsored by the Church of Christ at 4710 Rice Road in Columbia, MO.
The series was broadcasted on station KRCG Channel 13, in August and September
of 2002.
Any requests for further information regarding this material should be sent to the church, at the above address, or you may contact Reggie Kinser at rkinser@msn.com.
It is the prayer of the church that all who read this material will be blessed and enlightened by the truth contained within. As a group of people who are striving to follow the NT pattern as closely as possible, we have a love for the souls of all men. We freely acknowledge that the material presented in this study is presented in a straightforward manner. We also believe that such is necessary in order to communicate the gross errors of Catholicism. Thus far, the response to this series has been excellent. It is our prayer that through this series of studies, many will be moved to examine their faith and ultimately embrace the truth.
Catholicism or Christianity? Part I
As we enter into this study I want to make it abundantly clear that we of the churches of Christ have no absolutely no ill-will in our hearts for those who are members of the Roman Catholic religion. On the contrary, as NT Christians we must always have compassion in our hearts for the souls of all men. As Paul said in regard to the Jews who rejected the gospel
Romans 10:1 he said, "Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God."
So it is with us today It is our "heart's desire" that those who are entangled in the web of Catholicism would hear and respond to the truth of God so that they might be saved. Therefore, our reason for speaking on this topic two-fold
First, over the past several weeks we have received both questions and comments regarding the teachings of Catholicism. Our objective, in the course of this study will be to address some of those questions. If you are among those who have written to us, we ask you to listen carefully throughout this series. Many of your concerns will be addressed in these sermons. Please listen and search the scriptures to see if the things we speak are supported by the word of God. If they are, we encourage you to accept and embrace them. If they are not, write to us so that we may know wherein we ere. Our desire is to teach only what is in accordance with the word of God.
Secondly, as we mentioned a moment ago, we care about the souls of men and women. The things that we speak on this program are spoken out of love and concern for the eternal well-being of all.
If the Catholic religion is the religion that we read about in the NT it is our duty to embrace and promote it. On the other hand, if Catholicism is not the religion that we read about in the NT then it must be a false religion. It must be a perverted form of Christianity. And based on the teaching of the NT, we know that those who teach and those who embrace a perverted gospel will loose their eternal souls.
It was out of concern for this very thing that Paul wrote to the Galatians in chapter 1:6-7. Notice his words
"Galatians 1:6-7 "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ."
Based on these words, the Galatian Christians were on the verge of apostasy. Why? Not because they were about to renounce Christ in favor of some pagan deity, but because they were about to embrace a perverted form of the Gospel. If you will take the time to read the little book of Galatians you will easily see that the perversion Paul is referring to involves the binding of certain ordinances from the Old Law. Things like the eating of certain meats, circumcision, and the keeping of certain holy days not bound under the New Covenant.
Although these may seem like minor issues to most people, Paul knew that they were more than enough to lead these early Christians away from the truth. He understood just how serious this matter was. And so, in the very next verse he commanded these Christians to cut their ties with anyone who promoted a perverted gospel.
Lord willing, we will have more to say about this later in the lesson. For now, let us enter into our study.
As we begin our study, I realize that the title of this sermon may sound somewhat strange to some people. I know that in the minds of some our listeners Catholicism and Christianity are one in the same thing. Today, I'm not only going to suggest to you that that is false, but I'm going to prove it from the word of God.
Like the vast majority of so-called Christian religions Catholicism is not
Christianity. Therefore, it is right that we not only notice the contrasts between
these religions, but it is right that we make the distinction between them.
I. Catholicism Is Not Christianity
Yes, you heard right, Catholicism is not genuine Christianity. It is not the religion of Christ and his followers, and it is not the religion that you read about in the Bible. This can be proved in a multitude of ways.
First, it is imperative that we define our terms
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary Christianity is defined as follows: "It is the religion taught by Christ and his followers, as revealed in the writings of Holy Scripture." Please allow me to repeat that. "Christianity is the religion taught by Christ and his followers as revealed in the writings of Holy Scripture."
Now let us ask the question; What is Catholicism? Again, Mr. Webster supplies
the definition: Catholicism is "the doctrines, methods, and organization
of the Roman Catholic Church."
Notice the contrast here
Christianity is the religion taught by Christ
and his followers, but Catholicism is the religion taught by the Roman Catholic
Church.
Think about it If Catholicism and Christianity were the same, why would they require different terms to identify them? The same could be said about Mormonism or Lutheranism. If these are the same religion as Christianity why do they require separate terms to identify them?
Listen friends, regardless of what you may have been taught, Christianity and Catholicism are not the same thing, there is a drastic difference between the two. Even though many people may misuse the term Christianity, to include all manner of sects and denominations, the real/proper meaning of the term excludes those who refuse to follow exclusively after the teachings of Christ and his apostles. This is precisely in line with what Jesus taught in Matthew 7:22-23 where he showed us a glimpse of the Judgment. He said
Matthew 7:22-23 "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we
not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders
in Your name?' 23"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart
from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'
Notice the term lawlessness. Consider, who are these people whom Jesus is accusing
of lawlessness? Are they the murderers and rapists of society? No
The
term lawlessness refers to those who exalt the religious doctrines of men above
that which God has given to us. It refers to those who pervert the law of God
by creating a manmade system of religion, thereby refusing to abide in the system
which God has provided through his word. In the words of Jesus, in Luke 6:46,
"But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I
say?
Manmade religion, any religion that teaches the doctrines of men is not genuine
Christianity. So it is with Mormonism, Lutheranism, and Catholicism. These,
and all others like them are religious systems of men. They are not of God.
God did not establish these systems, neither are they subject unto him. In other
words they are lawless because they operate outside of his law. Genuine Christianity
is not made up of sects. Contrary to popular opinion Jesus did not preach a
gospel of religious diversity. He did not preach a Gospel of sectarianism where
everyone is at liberty to believe his own peculiar creed or doctrine. Catholicism
is a system of religion that is only minutely linked to the Scripture. It is
absolutely a system of manmade ordinances and doctrines.
Having defined the terms Christianity and Catholicism and shown our definitions to be in harmony with God's word let us now move on to our next point
II. Catholicism Teaches an Unbiblical Plan of Salvation
Although we could go into great detail on the errors of Catholicism regarding the subject of salvation, our objective in this study is to keep it as simple as possible. Therefore, in the interest of time I'm going to contain my remarks to one specific practice of Catholicism in this area. Believe me, the Catholic religion has numerous unbiblical teachings regarding salvation. The one I have chosen to address this morning is the practice of infant baptism.
That the Catholic church practices what it calls infant baptism is common knowledge. Their attempt to justify this practice is not only fallacious it is extremely feeble. Based on the articles that I have read by those who have attempted to defend this practice, one proponent went to Matthew 28:19 where Jesus commanded his disciples to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. His reasoning was that since "all nations" included babies Jesus condoned the practice of baptizing babies.
Some proponents go to Acts 16:33 where the Bible speaks of the Philippian jailer, stating that he and his household were baptized. Tell me friends, is there anyone out there who really believes that this is sound biblical reasoning. There is absolutely nothing in the text to prove that the Philippian Jailer had infant children. The only way anyone could come to such a flawed conclusion is to ignore other plain Bible passages on the subject of salvation. For instance, notice the parallel passage to Matthew 28. In Mark 16:16 Jesus said
Mark 16:16 "He who "believes" and is baptized will be saved;
but he who does not believe will be condemned."
Now tell me friends, can an infant believe? Of course not
Infants cannot
understand the gospel much less believe it. Jesus said, "He who believes
and is baptized will be saved."
You know, it struck me as I was thinking about this passage how that this is
the exact opposite of what the "faith only" proponents teach. They
(the faith only people) would have us understand that all you have to do to
be saved is believe. While in essence, the Catholic doctrine places all the
emphasis on baptism. So, which one is right? Neither
they're both wrong!
One is just as wrong, just as unbiblical as the other. The truth of the matter
is that Jesus requires both belief and baptism for salvation. Listen friends,
what religious people need to do is quit reading into the scripture what they
want it to say, and start taking it for what it does say. Churches need to give
up their "church doctrines" and cease misrepresenting the Holy Scriptures
in order to make them fit in with their manmade doctrines.
Now before I leave this point I want to notice one more passage that proves our conclusion. Notice please, the account of Philip and the eunuch in Acts 8:36-38
Acts 8:36-38 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the
eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"
(notice the words of Philip) Then Philip said, "If you believe with all
your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God."38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still.
And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Yes, belief is absolutely essential to salvation. Any person who does not, or
cannot believe the gospel is not a fit candidate for baptism. Anyone who is
baptized without believing is still in his or her sin. Philip said, "If
you believe with all your heart, you may."
Listen to me friends, people who have been baptized in their infancy, and think
they are saved, are tragically mistaken. There is no such doctrine in the word
of God as infant baptism.
The conclusion is obvious, infant baptism is a manmade doctrine. It leads people
into a false sense of security, and it causes them to believe that they are
saved when in essence they're on the road to eternal destruction. Infant baptism
is not biblical, it has no divine authority, and is therefore a false doctrine.
But the really sad thing about it is that on the Day of Judgment, those who
trust in it will be severely disappointed. Remember, Jesus said, "why do
you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say?
Yes, Catholicism teaches a perverted plan of salvation, but genuine Christianity
teaches the truth. Today, if I were a member of an organization that taught
a perverted plan of salvation, I'd be out of there in a heartbeat. Friend, your
soul is far too precious and eternity is much too long to trust in some manmade
plan to save you. Remember, Jesus said it's the truth that makes us free from
sin.
Today, I implore you, seek the truth while there is time.
III. Catholicism Has the Wrong Head
Today, it is common knowledge that the pope of Rome is the head of the Roman Catholic church. This is not something we need to document.
The word pope comes from the Latin word papa. Therefore the Pope is often referred to as the "Holy Father." He unashamedly assumes this designation in spite of what Jesus said about the wearing of such titles in Matthew 23:9. Jesus said
Matthew 23:9 "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in Heaven."
Yes, Jesus himself condemned the wearing of such religious titles as "father". Tell me friend, did Jesus mean what he said when he gave this command? He said, "Do not call anyone on earth your father."
True Christianity abides by this command. And yet the pope and the religion of Catholicism openly defy it. For centuries they have encouraged their followers to violate this precept of Jesus. Once again the term "lawlessness" comes to mind. Catholicism is a religious system that has very little, if any, respect for the law of Christ. Indeed, it practices lawlessness.
That Catholicism has an earthly head, the pope, whom it recognizes as the head
of the church is universally understood. This man sits in the highest position
of authority within that organization. However, the NT makes absolutely no provision
for such a position within the Lord's church. Nowhere the Bible do we read about
an earthly head over the Lord's church. God never placed any human being in
that position. And my friend if you want to know why, all you have to do is
look at what happened with the very first pope.
According to reliable history the first man to wear the title of Pope was Boniface
III. He was designated to that position by the Roman Emperor, Phocus in 606
AD. Regardless of what some of you may have read in Catholic literature, there
were no popes until 606 AD. This was well into the apostasy that the apostle
Paul prophesied about in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4. The scripture says
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 "Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day
will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed,
the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called
God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing
himself that he is God."
The context of this statement is this
Someone had incorrectly taught the
Thessalonian Christians that the coming of Christ had already occurred. As Paul
writes to correct this error, he informs them that a great apostasy must occur
before the coming of Christ. He said, "for that Day will not come unless
the falling away comes first". The term "falling away" comes
from the Greek word apostasia, which is the source of our English word "apostasy".
And so, Paul informs the brethren that a great apostasy is going to occur in
the Lord's church. When that time comes the "man of sin" the "son
of perdition" will be revealed.
Concerning this man of sin, verse 4 says, that he will exalt himself above all that is called God, and that he will sit in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God."
Notice please what the very first pope, pope Boniface III did?
1. He took a position as head over the apostate church.
2. He claimed infallibility in matters of religion.
3. He claimed authority over all of God's creation.
Just so there is no misunderstanding about this, allow me to quote from his words. Pope Boniface III said, "We say, define, and pronounce to every human creature that it is altogether necessary to salvation to be subject to the Roman pontiff."
Yes, this man, the first pope of Rome exalted himself to the position of God. He encouraged men to address him with such titles as, "our Lord God the Pope" and "another God on earth". He made subjection to him a condition of salvation.
Just as the apostle Paul prophesied, this "man of sin" exalted himself above all that is worshiped, and declared himself to be God. This was the official beginning of the office of Pope. It took place, not in the first or second century, but in the 7th century, in 606 AD. And although is impossible to fix an exact date on the establishment of Catholicism, for you see apostasy is a progressive process, one thing is for certain, by 606 AD the apostasy of Catholicism was full blown.
Down through the ages Catholicism has had its popes. Anyone who reads the history of these men will quickly learn that they were anything but godly. They were in the truest sense of the term, lawless. That is why the scripture uses the term "man of sin" in reference to the succession of popes.
In contrast, the church of the NT never had an earthly head. There is no passage anywhere in the Word of God that authorizes an earthly head of the church.
Today, the proponents of Catholicism would have us believe that the apostle Peter was the first pope. Certainly, this is a widespread fallacy among Catholics. Lord willing, we plan to take that subject in our next program. But for now, let it suffice us to look at what the scripture says about the head of the church that you read about in the NT.
When it comes to matter of headship over the Lord's church true Christianity teaches something far different than Catholicism. Today, we're not going to cite some manmade catechism, or refer you to some decree by a church association or synod in order to prove this point. All we have to do is go to the word of God. Yes, I know that some of our listeners already know what it says. But listen friends, not everyone knows the scripture. Many people just read right over plain bible passages that condemn their practices without even making the application. So today I ask you to listen very carefully to the words of Scripture. Give it the attention it deserves, and see if it fits your doctrine.
Colossians 1:15-18 "He (Christ) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence."
Now if you would like to reference those verses compare Ephesians 5:23 and Colossians 2:10, and then couple this with the fact that no passage of Scripture ever shows a man in the position of head over the Lord's church.
Yes, my friends, Catholicism has a human head. He wears the titles of Father, pope and God, just like the prophesies on apostasy declared that he would. But the true church has only one head. As followers of Christ we recognize Jesus as the only head of his church.
Catholicism or Christianity? Part II
For the sake of clarity I want to take a moment to remind you of the main points of our first lesson in this series.
I. Catholicism Is Not Christianity-
II. Catholicism Teaches an Unbiblical Plan of Salvation-
III. Catholicism Has the Wrong Head/Governing Authority-
Since the entire structure of Catholicism rests upon the premise that Peter
was the first pope, it is important that we deal with this claim in some detail.
Therefore, what I'm going to do today is pick up my third point from the last
program and continue with that thought.
Having already established by the word of God that Jesus Christ is the head of the NT church, and that it is common knowledge that the pope is the head of the Catholic church, I now want to consider four reasons why Peter could not have been the first pope.
1. Peter could not have been the first pope, because he was humble.
In other words, the apostle Peter never exalted himself above others, as is typical with all of the popes. Neither did he allow men to bow down in obeisance before him. There is a case in Acts 10, when a man named Cornelius bowed before him Peter But in verse 26 we read these words
Acts: 10:26 "But Peter lifted him up, saying, "Stand up; I myself
am also a man."
Yes, Peter was a man of humility. He was a humble servant of God. And although
he was an apostle, he never exalted himself as an object of worship. Peter knew
that God alone was worthy of man's worship. But Peter also foresaw the arrogance
and pride of false religious rulers who would exalt themselves. And so, in 1
Peter 5:3-5 he charged all men to be "clothed with humility", and
he charged elders not to "lord over the church." Yes, Peter was a
humble servant of our Lord. However, based on the image portrayed of him by
Catholicism one would never know that he refused to accept the worship of men.
According to multiple, reliable, sources I am told that there is a large, bronze,
statue supposedly of St. Peter inside the Vatican, where the adherents of Catholicism
line up by the hundreds to bow down and kiss the foot of this image. I am also
told that this has been done for so long, and so often, that the toe of this
image has been completely worn away. My, my, you talk about an insult
you talk about a slap in the face to a humble servant of God. Peter would never
have permitted such a thing during his lifetime. He would have denounced it
in no uncertain terms. If he were alive today, based on what he wrote in God's
holy word he would condemn it from the very depths of his soul. And yet, because
of the erroneous and fallacious teachings of Catholicism, millions of people
sincerely believe that exalting men and bowing down before them is a means of
honoring God. Such teaching is heresy, and those who practice it are being duped
and exploited.
Ironically, the apostle Peter, himself, wrote about this kind of thing in 2 Peter 2:1-3
2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
Yes, good and sincere people are being exploited by these doctrines. And as we shall see later in this study, Catholicism has not only twisted the facts about Peter, they have built an entire empire on just such things as this.
In spite of such false doctrine, the word of God proves that during his lifetime, Peter refused to be worshipped. He did not allow men to bow down before him, and he was never carried about on a throne as an image of worship. Peter refused to take upon himself the glory that belonged only to God, and he was absolutely right in doing so. The same cannot be said of the popes of Catholicism. This is apparent from a statement made by Cardinal Du Perron, He said,
"As there is only one God in Heaven, so there ought to be a God on earth All Christians should look upon the pope as God himself." (P.65, What is the Church )
Now Friends, I don't know how you feel about that, but it makes me uncomfortable just to read it. That's about as close to blasphemy as you can get. And yet, the Pope is often addressed by his constituents in this way, he is often referred to as God. He is exalted, he is glorified, and he is worshipped by men. And yet he says nothing against this, willingly accepting their exaltations and their worship. It is just as the Apostle Paul prophesied, when he wrote about the great apostasy. In 2 Thess.2:3-4, he pictured the "man of sin" and as one who "exalts himself as God."
Today, I say this without fear of contradiction, for no man can prove otherwise Peter was not a pope. His words, and his life as documented in the pages of the NT condemn the entire papal system, undeniably and emphatically.
For those of our listeners who profess Catholicism, I implore lovingly you
to study your bibles and reject this false system of worship.
2. That Peter was not the first pope is seen in the fact that the other apostles
did not regard him as their superior.
You know, the apostle Peter's name is actually mentioned in the NT over 150 times. There is a great deal said about this man. However, isn't it interesting that none of the NT writers ever addressed him as "pope" or Holy Father" or "God on earth" as men address the pope, today? Nowhere is Peter acknowledged as being superior to any of the other apostles. As a matter of fact, in 2 Corinthians 11:5 Paul through divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit made a statement that proves that he and Peter were on precisely the same level as apostles.
In 2 Corinthians 11:5 Paul said, "For I consider that I am not at all
inferior to the most eminent apostles."
Then, in Galatians 2:11-14 it was Paul who publicly rebuked Peter for his hypocritical
conduct. Notice his words
Galatians 2:11 "Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed."
By the way, if you're following along in your Bible back up a couple of verses and look at verse 9. There, Peter is referred to as one of the "pillars" of the church. He was obviously not the head of all the churches. Yes, Peter was a leader. He was a beloved and faithful apostle, and he was prominent, but he was not pre-eminent. 1 Timothy 5:16 refers to Christ as the blessed and "only" Potentate. Therefore, we must conclude that Peter was not a pope.
3. Peter could not have been the first pope because he was married-
Catholicism has a doctrine that compels its clergy to be celibate. By the way, this is an unbiblical doctrine, which we may have more to say about later. Biblical or not, it is one of the requirements of Catholicism. Here is another piece of evidence that proves that Catholicism and Christianity are two entirely different religions.
Although Catholicism denies its clergy the right to marry, Christianity requires that elders/bishops be the husband of one wife.
1 Timothy 3:1-2 "This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife "
Now tell me friends, did you get that? The teaching of Christianity and the teaching of Catholicism are diametrically opposed on this subject. No man can occupy the office of Bishop or Elder in the Lord's church unless he is married. However, according to the Catholic religion one must be unmarried to occupy such a position. So what does all this have to do with the apostle Peter? Just this Peter was an Elder. This is plainly stated by Peter himself in
1 Peter 5:1 "The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed."
Yes, Peter was an Elder in the Lord's true church. As such, he was a married man. According to 1 Corinthians 9:5, the scripture even acknowledges the fact that he took his wife with him as he traveled from place to place preaching the Gospel.
1 Corinthians 9:5 Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do
also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?
The name Cephas, in the NT refers to Peter. These verses and others prove that
he was married. The Christian religion not only allows this, it requires it.
That Peter was married is undeniable. However, popes and officials in the catholic
organization cannot be married, therefore we must conclude that Peter was not
a pope. As a matter of fact, Peter was not even a Catholic.
Once again the claims of Catholicism are shown to be in error. The doctrine of compulsory celibacy came into existence during the apostasy. According to NT prophesy, it is one of the marks of apostasy. Notice the passage in 1 Timothy 4:1-3.
1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, (apostasy) giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3forbidding to marry, (celibacy) and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
Yes, my friends, "compulsory celibacy" is a doctrine of the apostate church. It is an identifying mark of apostasy. Along with the office of pope these characteristics undeniably link Catholicism to the apostasy.
The apostle Peter had absolutely no connection with either of these things. Peter was an Elder or Bishop in the Lord's Church, and as such he was married. There is no man on earth who can prove otherwise.
4. Peter could not have been a pope because he taught that God's will had been revealed in its fullness.
In contrast, Catholicism believes in continued revelation. In 2 Peter 1:3, Peter declared the fact that in his lifetime, God had revealed to the apostles and early Christians "all things" pertinent to eternal life and godly living. Peter said
2 Peter 1:3 "His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness "
In other words, what Peter is saying is that God's will for man had been revealed in its fullness. God, in the days of the apostles, had revealed everything that man needed in order to serve him and be accepted into eternal life. This is precisely what the other apostles taught, as well. For instance in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Paul Identified the Holy Scriptures as man's total source of guidance and direction in the Lord.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Now, couple that with the words of Peter in 1 Peter 4:11
1 Peter 4:11 "If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God."
Yes, Paul and Peter believed in the all-sufficiency of the word of God. And although the Catholic religion, by its practices denies this concept, the NT clearly teaches it. These verses and others clearly teach that the NT is God's complete and final revelation to mankind. This is precisely what the apostle Jude meant in Jude verse 3, when he commanded the early Christians to "earnestly contend for the faith which was "once for all" delivered to the saints."
You see, unlike the teachings of Catholicism, the apostles taught that God's will as revealed in the NT was final. The system of faith as delivered to the church in the days of the apostles was and is complete. God's wisdom in doing this ought to be apparent. Just take a moment and look at the religious world. Today there is mass confusion and disagreement on every hand. Why? Because most religions refuse to accept the word of God as all-sufficient. Almost every so-called Christian religion wrongly believes in the concept of on-going revelation.
So it is with Catholicism. The Catholic religion does not believe in the all-sufficiency of the Bible. As a matter of fact, in 1837 in a public debate in Cincinnati, Ohio a representative of the Catholic church, bishop Purcell admitted that the Catholic religion is not a religion based on the Holy Scripture. Obviously someone needs to explain this to the millions of people who think otherwise. As we documented in our previous sermon, Catholicism is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church, but true Christianity is based on the teachings of Christ and his apostles. Since God, in his infinite wisdom understood the tendency of man to corrupt and pervert religion, he gave us his word in written form.
Today, we don't have to wonder who is right about religion. Is it Catholicism, or Mormonism, or Seventh-Day-Adventism, all of which erroneously believe in on-going revelation? No, any religion that teaches on-going revelation is not the religion of the NT. God has given us the truth in the form of his inspired word. It and it alone is the only reliable guide in all matters of faith. Jesus, himself made this point with the Pharisees in Mark 7:8-9 when he said
Mark 7:8-9 For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men-the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do." 9He said to them, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
Yes, Jesus condemned the Pharisees for their keeping of manmade traditions, instead of following God's word. The Jews of Jesus' day had developed a system of religion based partly on the word of God and partly on their own traditions. As a result they had strayed away from the truth. I wonder, does this sound familiar to anyone?
It has been said, and rightly so, that the only thing more deceptive than untruth, is untruth mixed with half-truth. This is what false Christianity always does. It's the only way most people will believe it. Apostasy always contains some shred of truth. It always retains some association with the Scripture. So it is with Catholicism. Catholicism is at best, a religion based on half-bible-truths, mixed with error. It is a religion based on the traditions of uninspired men, who have no respect for the sovereignty and preeminence of Jesus Christ.
Yes, my friends, Catholicism has the wrong head. It has a human head, but the church of Christ looks to Christ for its authority. Some may ask the question; how can the church function without an earthly head? The answer is simple, if you believe in scripture. Christ guides his church today through his word. As Paul said in Ephesians 5:23 the church is subject to Christ in everything.
The apostles did not believe in manmade traditions or on-going revelation, they condemned such things and branded them as heresy.
In conclusion, I want you to think about this Have you ever wondered why Catholicism and other religions have changed down through the ages of time? Why is it not okay to eat certain meats on certain days, but then suddenly it becomes okay? The answer is obvious, if you think about what we've studied. Men take it upon themselves to change the law of God. On-going revelation is merely a cover, a cloak that allows ungodly men to make up their own system of religion. That may work for a while, but sadly, those who trust in manmade religion are going to be sorely disappointed on the Day of Judgment.
Today, we plead with those who are caught up in the unbiblical doctrines of Catholicism to do as the Bereans of old; search the scriptures and see if the things that are taught in the realm of Catholicism are true. God bless
Catholicism or Christianity? Part III
I want to take a moment to remind you of the main points of our first two lessons in this series. In lesson #1 we discussed three main points.
I. Catholicism Is Not Christianity-
II. Catholicism Teaches an Unbiblical Plan of Salvation-
III. Catholicism Has the Wrong Head/Governing Authority-
Then in lesson #2 we discussed four reasons why Peter could not have been a pope.
1. Peter could not have been the first pope, because he refused to be worshipped.
2. Peter could not have been the first pope because the other apostles did not
regard him as their superior.
3. Peter could not have been the first pope because he was married.
4. Peter could not have been a pope because he taught that God's will had been
revealed in its fullness.
This brings us to point number four in this series...
IV. The Catholic church is built on the wrong foundation
Some of you will remember that in a recent study we pointed out that the Catholic religion has for its head a sinful, mortal man, but that the church of the NT had only the sinless Son of God for its head. In today's study we shall notice that the Catholic religion not only has a different head, but that it also has a different foundation than Christianity.
In Isaiah 28:16 God spoke to his Prophet Isaiah about the foundation of the coming kingdom/church, which he would establish in Jerusalem. Here the prophet writes about the establishment of the church some 700 years before it came into existence.
Isaiah 28:16 "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation "
In this passage, as in many others, the church is referred to metaphorically as a building a building whose foundation stone is tried, precious, and sure.
Question: To what, or whom does this passage refer? Who is this precious cornerstone within the foundation of God's church that Isaiah is referring too? Is Peter the rock, or cornerstone that is in view here? Is he the "tried," "sure" and "precious stone" upon which the church is built? The word of God has the answer. Notice the scripture in Ephesians 2:19-21
Ephesians 2:19-21 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
Now, tell me friends, who is the "chief cornerstone" upon which the church of our Lord is built? Is it Paul, or John, or James, or Peter, or any of the apostles? Is any of the apostles superior to the others? No While the apostles all play a part in the foundation, none of them is the "chief cornerstone."
Verse 20 tells us that, "Jesus Christ, Himself is the "chief cornerstone". He is the one whom the prophet Isaiah was speaking about. He is the stone that is tried and sure. He is "precious" stone, the main component in the foundation of His church.
Again, in 1 Corinthians 3:9-11 this Bible truth is made obvious to all who will hear.
1 Corinthians 3:9-11 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field,
you are God's building. 10According to the grace of God which was given to me,
as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it.
But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11For no other foundation can
anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
My friends, it doesn't get any more conclusive than that. Not only does the
word of God identify Jesus Christ as the chief foundation stone of his church,
but it also insists that "no other foundation" can anyone lay than
that which was laid which is Jesus Christ. Therefore we must conclude that Jesus
Christ is the foundation stone upon which Christianity was built. The word of
God is absolutely irrefutable on this matter. However, in contrast to this teaching,
Catholicism teaches that Peter, not Jesus was the rock upon which the Lord's
church was built. The proponents of Catholicism misuse Matthew 16:18 in an effort
to establish Peter as the first pope. According to their doctrine, he is the
rock upon which Jesus built his church. Let us notice the passage.
Matthew 16:14-15 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked
His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah
or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that
I am?"
Please notice what Jesus is doing
He is setting the stage in order to
establish his deity. Jesus wants his apostles to recognize and acknowledge that
he is the Son of God. This is the objective of the entire discussion. In verse
16, Peter makes the divine declaration that Jesus is looking for.
Matthew 16:16-18 Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the
Son of the living God." Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are
you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but
My Father who is in heaven. "And I also say to you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail
against it."
Due to their failure to keep the words of Jesus in their overall context, some
have wrongly concluded that Peter was the rock upon which Jesus would build
his church. Down through the years, the proponents of Catholicism have attempted
to make a connection between the words "Peter" and "rock"
in the Greek. The fallacy of this is easily recognized by anyone who will take
the time to examine the Greek.
First, it is significant to note that the words in question, "Peter" and "rock" are two different words. Peter comes from the Greek word petros, but the word rock comes from the word petra. A closer examination of these words in the original language also reveals that they are words of a different gender petros being masculine gender, and petra being feminine gender.
Yes, friends the Holy Spirit inspired Matthew to record the words of Jesus in such a way as to leave no doubt about their meaning. The interpretation placed upon this passage by Catholicism is absolutely false. The teaching that Peter is the rock upon which Jesus would build his church is a myth. The Greek text cannot support it, by any means. Under no circumstances is Jesus saying that Peter is the rock upon which he will build his church.
The only question that remains is, why did Jesus make the statement, "you are Peter (petros)? The answer is found in the Greek definition of the words, petros and petra. Petros (the word for Peter) means a detached piece of rock, a small stone or pebble. But the word "petra" refers to a massive ledge, or bedrock.
Now, if you will take the time to think about this, the truth becomes apparent. Peter is a small stone, and although he would have a place in the foundation of the church, he is not the ledge or bedrock upon which Jesus is going to build his church. Remember, the greater fact of Christ's deity is what is in view here. Peter had just confessed this. Jesus had set the stage for it, by asking his disciples to declare his identity. Peter said, "you are the Christ, the Son of God!
Listen friends, that is a huge statement. If you know anything about the Jewish customs and religion of that day, you know that had Peter made that confession in the presence of some of the Jewish hierarchy he would have been stoned to death. The meaning of Jesus' words is clear. Peter was a small stone in the foundation of the church, but the massive rock that Christ was going to build his church upon was the fact that he is the son of the almighty God.
Yes, Jesus is the rock. He is identified in many passages of scripture as such.
1 Corinthians 10:4 clearly identifies him as the Rock.
According to his own words in Matthew 21:42, he is the stone that was rejected
by the builders. Sadly, many still reject him today as the foundation and head
of the church.
According to Ephesians 2:20 he is the chief cornerstone upon which his church
is built.
Based on the words of 1 Corinthians 3:11 there is "no other foundation
that anyone can lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
Tell me friends, how much clearer does the scripture need to be? The word of
God explicitly states that Jesus Christ is the foundation of the true church.
The Christian religion is built upon Christ. The whole of Christianity hinges
upon his deity. But, Catholicism is built on and around the pope. He wears the
titles of holy Father, God, etc., and millions of Catholics bow down before
him.
The true church is built on the deity of Jesus Christ, but Catholicism is built on a man, a man who claims a position that no man has the right to claim. Based on the word of God, no man can do what Catholicism attempts to do. That is, lay another foundation in the place of Jesus Christ. Today, people need to know that regardless of the titles he wears, he is not God, nor does he represent God. Therefore, we must conclude that Catholicism and Christianity are built on two very different foundations Catholicism is built on the misconception that Peter was the first Pope. Its structure is designed around the fallacy that the pope is God on earth. But Christianity is built on the deity of Jesus Christ.
One is built on the human, the other on the divine. One is built on a sinful man, the other is built on the sinless Son. One is built on pride, presumption, and arrogance, the other is built on humility, sacrifice and obedience.
Notice please the words of Paul in Philippians 2:8-11. Speaking of Jesus he said
Philippians 2:8-11 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself
and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore
God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every
name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and
of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Think about friends
Jesus humbled himself to the point of death on the
cross. He died for the sins of the world. No man could do what Jesus did. In
response to his obedience God has exalted him to a position of glory, and given
him a name above all others. It is at the name of Jesus that every knee should
bow. Not the name of the pope, not the name of Mary, and no, not even at the
name of Peter. And so, as NT Christians we worship no man, for no man is worthy
of our worship. All of our worship belongs to Lord God of Heaven. As Jesus told
Satan, when he invited him to fall down and worship before him, he said
Luke 4:8 Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Yes, the contrast is between these two religions is drastic. Catholicism is a religious system where men exalt themselves as well as each other, but Christianity is a religion where God and his son Jesus Christ are worshipped and exalted. True Christianity is not built on a mortal man. It is built on Jesus Christ, the Savior, and Son of the Almighty God. Therefore, let us worship him.
V. Catholicism Teaches Unbiblical Doctrines
Although we won't be able to complete this point today, I want to at least introduce it so that our listeners can look over some of the scriptures and begin to study it before our next program.
The statement that Catholicism teaches unbiblical doctrines, doesn't fully convey the meaning that it should, because most people don't realize the importance that God places on bible doctrine. Therefore, what I want to do in the time that we have left, is emphasize what the word of God has to say about doctrine. In doing so, I hope to set the stage for our next program where we intend to contrast some of the doctrines of Catholicism with the doctrines of Christianity.
Although many religious people think doctrine is unimportant, those who understand and believe the scripture know that such is not the case. The word doctrine occurs over forty times in the NT. In addition to this, there are other terms that are used interchangeably and refer to the same concept terms like "gospel" "word" and "truth."
The word of God repeatedly affirms that the doctrine of Christ and his apostles must not be changed. For instance, notice what Paul wrote to the young man Timothy in
1 Timothy 1:3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia-remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine
Notice the phrase, "teach no other doctrine." As one commentator said, the meaning of this verse is that, "they are to put nothing in the place of the gospel and let them add nothing to it." That is precisely what this verse means. Paul left Timothy with the congregation at Ephesus as a safeguard to make certain that manmade doctrines did not creep into the Lord's church.
Also notice a similar verse, in Romans 16:17
Romans 16:17 "Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple."
Yes, the Bible affirms the fact that no other doctrine other than that which came through the apostles was to be accepted. This passage makes it clear that those who teach other doctrines are not serving the Lord, even though their words may be smooth and flattering.
This verse also shows that Paul realized that false teachers had the ability to lead good and sincere people away from the truth. It is sad but true that false doctrine is more attractive to the masses than genuine bible doctrine. This, however, does not surprise us, for even in the Garden of Eden Satan understood what it took to entice the carnal mind.
Not surprisingly, this same warning is stated in many other places. Notice Galatians1:6-7
Galatians1:6-7 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Yes, even in Paul's day men were attempting to pervert the gospel of Christ on every hand. Paul knew that the Lord's church was in danger, and that souls would be lost if the doctrine was not kept pure. And so, in an effort to halt this digression into error, this apostasy, he wrote some very direct and explicit words to the Galatian Christians.
Notice his words in Galatians 1:8
Galatians 1:8 "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other
gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed."
Yes, Paul warned the Galatians, he warned Timothy, he warned the Christians
at Ephesus, and he warned the Christians at Rome not to deviate from the doctrine
that they had received. Now what this means to us today ought to be obvious
.
If none of the first century churches of Christ had the right to alter the doctrine
of Christ and his apostles, neither do we.
Listen friends, no one has the right to change the things that God has given
us through his word. Today it makes no difference how much men may cry out for
innovations in religion, God says, we must accept "no other doctrine."
Even if an apostle or an angel comes along and brings to you some other doctrine,
you reject it, and him.
Now tell me friends, after a statement like that how in the world could anyone conclude that a pope, a council, a synod, any man, or group of men have the authority to change one jot or tittle in the doctrine of Jesus Christ? And yet this is precisely what happened. Just as Paul warned in Acts 20:28-30 ungodly men arose from within the church, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
For in 2 Timothy 4:3 he wrote,
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers."
Paul knew that there would come a time when men would refuse to cling to the doctrine of scripture. Today, we know that this prophecy has been fulfilled many times over. Men have brought in all kinds of unbiblical doctrines into their religions.
Tell me, have you ever wondered why there are so many doctrines and practices in Catholicism that are never found in the Bible?
Things like:
-Prayer to the saints
-Prayers for the dead
-Compulsory celibacy
-Infant baptism
-Sprinkling:
-Indulgences
-Auricular Confession
These things along with many others were never a part of the doctrine of Christ. Today, they are still not part of his doctrine. Matthew 15:9 proves that God will never accept the doctrines and ordinances of men. It says
Matthew 15:9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments
of men.' "
If you or someone you know is worshipping according to the doctrines of Catholicism
we implore you to turn away from such while there is time.
Lord willing, in our next study we plan to take a brief look at some of these
doctrines and see what the NT has to say about them.
Catholicism or Christianity? Part IV
What we have established thus far?
I. Catholicism Is Not Christianity-
II. Catholicism Teaches an Unbiblical Plan of Salvation-
III. Catholicism Has the Wrong Head/Governing Authority-
IV. Catholicism Has the Wrong Foundation-
V. Catholicism Teaches Unbiblical Doctrines-
As we closed the last lesson we emphasized the fact that only the teachings of Christ and his apostles are to be accepted by the church as doctrine. We made this point using multiple bible verses, which prove that the doctrine that was preached by the apostles was not to be changed or altered in any way.
First, we noticed what Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1:3, where Timothy was commanded not to allow the teaching of any other doctrine. He said, charge them that they teach no other doctrine than that which the apostles had taught. We noticed the phrase, "teach no other doctrine" and how that the meaning of this verse is that nothing is to be put in the place of the gospel, and nothing is to be added to it.
We also noticed how that Paul left Timothy with the congregation at Ephesus as a safeguard to make certain that "no other doctrines" were allowed to creep into the Lord's church.
Then we went Romans 16:17 where the Christians at Rome were instructed to "mark and avoid" those who cause divisions and offenses, "contrary to the doctrine which they had learned." That passage goes on to say that those who teach other doctrines are not serving our Lord Jesus Christ, rather they were deceiving people with smooth words and flattering speeches.
We then we went to Galatians1:6-7, where Paul wrote to a group of Christians who were already in the process of embracing a perverted form of the Gospel.
Galatians1:6-7 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called
you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7which is not another; but
there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Yes, even in Paul's day men were attempting to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Some wanted to intermingle ordinances of the Old Law with it. Others wanted
to mix in certain aspects of paganism or human philosophy, much like many religions
do today. But Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, understood the great
danger in this. He knew that if the doctrine were not kept pure, people would
be misled and souls would be lost. And so, in an effort to halt this digression
into error, he wrote a series of warnings to the brotherhood. He warned the
Galatians, he warned Timothy, he warned the Christians at Ephesus, Rome, and
Corinth not to deviate from the doctrine that they had received. And in the
process, he warned all Christians throughout the ages of time not to depart
from the doctrines of the NT.
Notice his words to the Galatians in
Galatians 1:8-9 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel
to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said
before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than
what you have received, let him be accursed.
Think about it friends, how much plainer does the Scripture have to be? The
Bible, the Holy Word of God explicitly states that Christians are to receive
no other doctrine/gospel than that which was delivered by the Christ and His
apostles. Then it goes on to say that even if Paul himself, or an angel from
Heaven brings some other gospel than that which they had received, let him be
accursed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the meaning of these verses is clear. We are not to receive any doctrine other than that which is written in this book. Anyone, be it an apostle, a prophet, a bishop, a counsel, a pope or even an angel who delivers such a message is to be accursed. Now what this means to us today ought to be obvious If none of the first century churches of Christ had the right to alter the doctrine of Christ and his apostles, neither do we.
You know friends, if Joseph Smith would have heeded this teaching, we would not have the Mormon religion today. If Charles T. Russell we would have heeded this teaching, we would not have the Jehovah's Witness organization. If Christians in the early years of the church would have heeded these warnings, we would not have Catholicism and its manmade doctrines today. But alas, as you already know, carnally minded men sprang up within the Lord's church. They refused to submit to the doctrine that was given by Christ and the apostles. As a result, much of the church was carried away into apostasy. The apostle Peter warned of this in 2 Peter 2:1-2. He said
2 Peter 2:1-2 "But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed."
Verse 3 goes on to say
2 Peter 2: 3 "By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words "
Paul also spoke of this departure from truth In 2 Timothy 4:3 he put it this way
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers."
Yes, the apostles knew that there would come a time when men would refuse and reject the doctrine of scripture. They knew that men would arise claiming to be apostles and prophets. They knew that some would claim to have a message from an angel, or perhaps from God himself and thereby lead many astray. Today, we know that this prophecy has been fulfilled many times over.
These verses help us to understand that the power of false religion is truly astounding, and that the line between truth and error is very thin. Nevertheless, according to the scripture, we know that the truth, alone, can free mankind from his sin. The Lord himself emphasized this in John 8:32 when he said, "you shall know the truth and "the truth" shall make you free."
Listen friends, the fact that a person believes he or she is saved does not make it so. No one will be saved by obedience to a perverted form of the gospel. Yes, it is absolutely possible for a person to think that they are saved, and still be lost.
Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death."
Based on the words of Jesus, we know that no one can please the Lord while following the after the doctrines and commandments of men. This is precisely what Jesus meant in Matthew 15:9, when he said
Matthew 15:9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments
of men."
This is why this study is so extremely important. Because when men deviate from
the truth, when they depart from the teachings of God's word, they are lost.
According to Jesus, even their worship is in vain.
Although today's sermon will barely scratch the surface regarding the multitude of doctrines that the Catholic religion has invented, we believe that any thinking person will readily see that these two religions, Catholicism and Christianity, teach very different doctrines.
It is sad but true that men have never been satisfied with doing things God's way. And although it is clear to all who will humble themselves that God's ways are higher than man's, those who are presumptuous and proud have always believed that they can improve on the will of the Almighty God. The audacity of so-called religious men is both appalling and disturbing.
If the things we are about to present today do not disturb you, if the fact that men have taken it upon themselves to adulterate and pervert the doctrines of God, then may I suggest that you do not understand or appreciate the superiority of God's wisdom over man's. No person, who has the proper respect and reverence for God would dare to change even one of his ordinances.
As we enter into this part of our study, we're going to notice a few of the many ways the teachings of Catholicism have perverted and subverted the truth. Tell me, have you ever wondered why there are so many doctrines and practices in Catholicism that are never found in the Bible?
UNBIBLICAL DOCTRINES OF CATHOLICISM INCLUDE
1. PRAYER TO THE SAINTS
2. PRAYERS FOR THE DEAD
3. PURGATORY
4. COMPULSORY CELIBACY
5. INFANT BAPTISM
6. SPRINKLING FOR BAPTISM
7. INDULGENCES
8. PENANCE
9. AURICULAR CONFESSION
The list goes on and on. Obviously we won't be able examine each of these in detail. However, I do want to take the time to point out a few obvious contradictions between some of these doctrines and the teaching of God's word.
First, consider the doctrine of
COMPULSORY CELIBACY. Compulsory celibacy of the priesthood is one of the many false doctrines of Catholicism. According to Neander's Church History this manmade doctrine was first announced in 305 A.D. by the Council of Elvira, in Spain. However it did not become a universal teaching of Catholicism until the year 1015 A.D.
Although the exact dates and places regarding the degree in which this doctrine has been practiced may be somewhat sketchy, it is a well-known fact that the Catholic Church imposes this practice upon its priests.
Just recently we have watched as the consequences of this false doctrine have
unfolded before our very eyes. I must tell you, that I am greatly saddened for
the victims in these cases. Certainly, the damage that has been done to innocent
children ought to be enough to open the eyes of everyone. Personally, I can't
help but wonder why people don't read their bibles and remove themselves from
this blatantly unwholesome, and ungodly system. While it is true that Catholicism
is wrong for inventing such a system, parents must also bear some responsibility
in this matter for not reading their Bibles, and removing their kids from it.
The word of God plainly identifies "forced celibacy" as a mark of
apostasy. Notice the passage in 1 Timothy 4:1-3
1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will
depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,
2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,
3forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created
to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
Yes, according to this prophecy of the Holy Spirit, compulsory celibacy is a characteristic of the apostate church. Naturally, those who study the word of God are not surprised when this mark shows up in Catholicism. If men would only read and study the word of God, they would realize the need to avoid such doctrines, as well as those who teach them.
Hebrews 13:4 plainly teaches that "Marriage is honorable, but that fornicators and adulterers will be severely judged by God. Furthermore, 1Cor.9:5 explicitly teaches that that apostles and evangelists of the first century had the right to take along a believing wife.
So, where does this leave those who bind celibacy? In a word, apostasy Forced celibacy is but one of the many false doctrines of Catholicism. The word of God does not teach it, and genuine Christianity does not practice it.
But, another unbiblical doctrine of Catholicism is
SPRINKLING FOR BAPTISM. Although the practice of sprinkling has been observed for many centuries, it is not a doctrine of genuine Christianity. Jesus and his apostles never authorized it and the word of God does approve it. The fact that the Catholic religion practices sprinkling in the place of immersion is common knowledge. But where, and when did this practice originate?
Based on the writings of church historians sprinkling was officially adopted by the Council of Ravenna in 1311. This is about 1280 years too late to be scriptural. Although sprinkling was authorized by the Roman Pontiff, the Greek Orthodox Church did not recognize it, and still does not practice it. But more importantly, genuine Christianity has never practiced it. For the scriptures plainly teach that Christian baptism in a likeness of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-5). Obviously, sprinkling is not. Furthermore, in Acts 8:36-39 we see a detailed account of Christian baptism showing two men "going down into the water" and "coming up out of the water" for the obvious purpose of immersion. Friends, this is a far cry from what the priests of the Roman Catholic church practice. And yet, this is precisely what Jesus commanded in Mark 16:15-16 when he commissioned his apostles to
Mark 16:15-16 "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. "He who believes and is baptized (immersed) will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Yes, Christianity teaches immersion in water for the remission of sins. Even the Catholic scholars admit that the Greek word baptizo, in the NT, refers to immersion. Still, they practice something entirely different.
Now friends, if we're honest with ourselves we know that this is not right. As we pointed out earlier in this lesson, Galatians1:8 instructs us that if anyone, (pope included) teaches any other doctrine than that which was delivered by the Christ and his apostles, let him be accursed. Jesus did not say, "he who believes and is "sprinkled" shall be saved and neither will it be so in the Day of Judgment. Those who have placed their trust in obedience to this manmade doctrine will be sorely disappointed. Today we plead with you to hear the word of the Lord.
Still another unbiblical doctrine of Catholicism is the sale of
INDULGENCES
One of the things that led Luther to openly defy the Catholic Church was the corruption that he saw within the system. The sale of indulgences was one of the many evidences of corruption in his day.
For those in our audience who may not know what the sale of indulgences is, it is the practice of the Roman Catholic Church selling forgiveness of sins to its members.
According to Abbot's History of Christianity, representatives of the Pope were sent to the churches with the message that any and all sin would be absolved and their souls would be as pure as an unborn child's as soon as the money jingles in the bottom of the box.
One pope put it like this He said, "I can also grant your indulgence so that any sins that you may commit hereafter shall be blotted out."
Obviously, such doctrines did not come from the Bible, for no one has ever bought his forgiveness with money. This doctrine is extremely wicked and self-serving. It not only encouraged the wealthy to sin, it also made the church wealthy in the process. But not only did the Catholic Church teach that men could purchase forgiveness for their own sins, they also invented the doctrine of Purgatory and sold indulgences to people who believed they had loved ones there. In other words, for the right amount of money a ticket could be bought for you or your loved ones. Do the words of the apostle Peter ring a bell? 2 Peter 2:3 "By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words "
It is impossible to know how many people have been exploited by such teaching. But the worst thing is not the money that was extorted from them. The greatest tragedy in all of this is that those who bought into this doctrine have lost something far more precious than money- they have lost their eternal souls. You see, money cannot purchase forgiveness of sins. Christianity has never believed that, and the Bible doesn't teach it.
1 Peter 1:18-19 "knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ "
In conjunction with this Titus 2: 4 teaches us that
Titus 2:14 (Jesus Christ) gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
There is no doubt about the teaching of Scripture on this subject. Man cannot
purchase his salvation with money, good works or any other earthly thing. Only
the precious blood of Jesus Christ our Savior can redeem man from his sins.
It is sad but true that some religious systems exist for the wrong reasons.
But what is even more tragic is the fact that many, many people don't study
their bibles enough to recognize and avoid those who pervert the doctrine of
Christ, thereby leading unsuspecting souls down the road to destruction. Listen
to me friends
Catholicism operates according to the doctrines of men,
not according to the teachings of God's word.
2 John 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ
does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father
and the Son.
Today, we have looked at several areas where the doctrines of Catholicism are
in direct opposition to the word of God. As such it opposes the principles and
precepts that genuine Christianity was commissioned to uphold. As we have stated
early on in this series Catholicism is not the same system as Christianity.
It has a different head, a different foundation, a different plan of salvation,
and it teaches different doctrines.
Catholicism refuses to abide in the doctrine of Christ. Based on the words of
John, those who do so do not have God.
Catholicism or Christianity? Part V
Please allow me to remind you of the points that we have addressed thus far:
I. Catholicism Is Not Christianity- (Based on the proper definition of these terms, Christianity is the adherence to the doctrines of Christ and his apostles, but Catholicism is the adherence to the ordinances of the Catholic Church)
II. Catholicism Teaches an Unbiblical Plan of Salvation- (That is, Catholicism practices sprinkling instead of immersion and it also sprinkles infants. Christianity never sanctions either of these practices)
III. Catholicism Has the Wrong Head/Governing Authority- (we showed in the Bible (Eph.5:23) that ":Christ is the head of his church" and we stated four biblical reasons why Peter "could not have been a pope")
IV. Catholicism has the wrong foundation- (We showed you from the scripture that Jesus Christ alone is the foundation upon which the church is built. Isaiah 28:16 prophesied that it would be so, and Eph.2:20 identifies Jesus Christ as the "chief Cornerstone")
V. Catholicism teaches unbiblical doctrines- (Under this heading, we discussed what the Bible has to say about the doctrine of Christ and his apostles. Using the word of God we proved that "only the doctrines of Christ and his apostles" are to be accepted by the church. And we pointed you to numerous bible verses, which prove that the doctrine, which was preached by the apostles, was not to be changed or altered in any way.
We then mentioned nine unbiblical doctrines of Catholicism, and we discussed the details of how and when the Catholic Church put certain of those doctrines in place. We also pointed out numerous Bible verses that condemn those doctrines.
Today, those of us who study Bible prophecy are not surprised that the teachings of Catholicism are in opposition to the teaching of Scripture. For this is precisely the way that the inspired writings of the apostles declared that it would be.
Notice the prophecy in 1 Timothy 4:1-3
1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
As we look at this passage of Scripture I want us to give serious consideration to some of the specific thoughts contained within it. Here, Paul writes to the young man Timothy to warn him about the coming apostasy. Notice please that the scripture links those who "depart from the faith" with two specific false doctrines.
1. They forbid some in their number to marry
2. They command their followers to abstain from eating certain meats.
Those of you who were with us last Lord's Day will remember our discussion of celibacy, and how that it was adopted as a universal teaching of Catholicism in the year 1015 A.D. Although "compulsory celibacy" is not biblical, it is common knowledge that the Catholic organization still forces its priests to abide by this doctrine.
You see, somehow the Catholic religion has convinced the masses that celibacy
is a higher state of holiness. While it is true that one who is celibate has
less distractions in serving the Lord, (Paul acknowledged this in 1 Cor.7) it
is also true that marriage has its advantages in serving God. This is why Elders
and bishops of the Lord's true church are required to be the husband of one
wife. And so the idea that celibacy is a holier state than marriage is completely
false. Hebrews 13:4 puts it very succinctly. It says,
Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators
and adulterers God will judge.
Yes, marriage is an honorable state. There is nothing in the scriptures about Celibacy being a more holy state than marriage.
In Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus himself pointed out the fact that it was God who gave us the institution of marriage. And in Genesis 2 we see him as he blesses this holy union. Therefore, we must conclude that marriage is a state that is no less holy than celibacy in the eyes of God. Having said that, I would also add that those who choose celibacy must keep themselves pure (i.e. from sexual immorality.)
The word of God tells us in many places that those who engage in sexual immorality will not inherit eternal life. Revelation 21:8 tells us that they will be cast into the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. I bring this to your attention, because according to a Catholic book entitled, "Catholic Morals" the term "celibacy" does not necessarily equate with chastity. The book goes on to state that based on Catholic doctrine, sexual immorality does not constitute a breaking of the vow of celibacy only marriage does this. In other words, according to Catholic doctrine, the vow of celibacy does not prohibit a priest from engaging in sexual misconduct. The vow is broken "only" if a priest marries. Obviously, the Catholic view of celibacy is a long way from being a more holy state than marriage. This explains how Catholic priests who engage in immoral acts are often left in office and moved from place to place.
Such doctrines and practices cannot help but encourage immoral behavior. And although all priests are not sexually immoral, I think most of us have been made aware of the unwholesome and ungodly breed of men this kind of an environment attracts. Compulsory celibacy is not only unbiblical; it is unwholesome and ungodly. It is indeed a mark of apostasy. But as we said a moment ago forced celibacy is not the only mark of apostasy.
The scripture also teaches us that the prohibition of certain kinds of foods is a mark of the apostate church, as well. Regarding the eating of meats, Paul went on in 1 Timothy 4:4-5 to say this
1 Timothy 4:4-5 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
In spite of what the word of God says, Catholicism commands its followers to abstain from certain meats on certain so-called holy days. I can remember when I was a child the school where I attended offered fish on Fridays because Catholics were commanded to abstain from other kinds of meat on that day. In the words of Scripture, this teaching is a "departure from the faith." It is not according to the doctrine of Christ and his apostles. Therefore, the question that I want to place before your minds today has to do with the origin of these doctrines. Where did the doctrines of "forced celibacy" and "prohibition of meats" originate? Although this may seem like an insignificant point, I'll assure it is not. Look back at the verse once more. It says
Where did these doctrines come from? The text tells us that those who teach these doctrines give heed to "deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons." Listen friends, it may seem like a small, insignificant thing to make a few changes in the law of God, but let me assure you that such is not the case. Manmade doctrines do not originate solely from man. According to the Bible, Satan and the forces of darkness are behind false doctrine.
According to this passage those who promote such doctrines have their consciences seared with a hot iron. In other words, they have no conscience when it comes to tampering with the doctrine of Christ. Sadly, even when someone comes along and points out the error of their doctrine, they often reject the plain teaching of Scripture, because their consciences are seared. What a tragic and dreadful situation to be in. Having the truth at your fingertips and still refusing to embrace it. It is just as the apostle said that it would be in 2 Timothy 4:3.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers."
My friends, the Catholic religion does not endure sound doctrine. If we were so disposed we could take several more programs discussing numerous other manmade doctrines of Catholicism. Just as we have proven by the scripture that celibacy, abstaining from meats, and indulgences are unbiblical, we could do the same with a host of other doctrines. But today, I am confident that we have proved our point beyond any reasonable doubt. Therefore, I say without any fear of contradiction, Catholicism teaches numerous unbiblical doctrines. Like all manmade religions it refuses to abide within the doctrine of Christ.
So where does that leave those who adhere to the Catholic system of religion? As the title of this program says, let us simply allow the Bible to answer that question. In 2 Jn. 9 we read these words
2 John 9 Whoever (this includes all men and all religions) transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
Yes, my friends, the Scripture is very plain. "Whoever" does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. And so today, we plead with you that if you or someone you know is failing to abide in the doctrine of Christ, if you know someone who is going beyond the teaching of Scripture you need to know that your soul is in danger.
Jesus said, "In vain they worship me teaching for doctrine the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:9)
What a tragedy to work and labor for something you thought would save your soul, only to be eternally lost, because you had placed your trust in the doctrines of men. Today it is our plea that all men everywhere would give up false doctrines and embrace only those things taught in God's word so that they might be saved.
This brings us to our final and concluding point in this series
VI. Catholicism is not the religion of the Bible
Based on what we have studied from the word of God throughout this series, one can come to no other conclusion than that Catholicism is not the religion of the Bible. It is not Christianity. The evidence that we have presented in the series is overwhelming. As a matter of fact, we have shown repeatedly that the teaching and practices of Catholicism are often in direct opposition to the teaching of the Scripture.
But today, I'm not asking our viewers to take my word for it. What I am asking you to do is look at the evidence. Look at the mountain of evidence that we have presented over the past few weeks. We have offered quote after quote (self incriminating statements) from the writings of Catholicism. We have given one historical fact after another. We have supplied you with dates and places where anti-biblical and ungodly practices were put into effect. We have shown you passage after passage from the word of God that condemns these practices.
And now, I want to call to your attention one more historical document. This one is preserved at the National Library in Paris, France, and is recorded in the History of the Church Through the Ages, by Robert H. Brumback. These words were penned by a cardinal of the Catholic Church to Pope Pius III.
Please listen carefully to the words of this Roman Catholic official. He said
"Of all the advice we can offer your holiness- we must open your eyes well and use all possible force in the matter. We must permit the reading of the gospel as little as possible in all the countries under your jurisdiction. Let the part of the gospel which is read in mass suffice, and let no one be permitted to read more. So long as the people will be content with the small amount, your interests will prosper, but as soon as the people want to read more [of the bible] your interests will begin to fail. The bible is the book, which more than any other has raised against us the tumults and tempests by which we have almost perished. In fact, if one compares the teachings of the Bible with what takes place in our churches he will soon find discord, and will realize that our teachings are often different from the Bible, and more often contrary to it."
There you have it friends, straight from the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, self-incriminating statements that what they practice is in discord with the word of God. Yes, down through the ages, one of the greatest fears of the Catholic Church has been that its people would learn that the things that it teaches are contrary to the Word of God.
Some of you may remember that a few months ago we presented a series of sermons emphasizing the importance of truth. In that series we pointed out that despite the fact that a person may believe that he or she has the truth, that person cannot be set free from their sins through error. A perverted gospel, or a false system of religion does not mysteriously become truth just because the masses believe it. The Bible teaches that those who obey or adhere to anything other than the truth of God's word will be eternally lost. This is why the apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians Although they had once understood and embraced the truth, they were in danger of being deceived by those who pedaled a perverted version of the Gospel.
As we have stated in the past, religious truth is not subjective. It is not
relative. Man, by his own wisdom cannot create his own version of moral truth.
Moral or religious truth comes only from God. Jesus himself declared this great
fact in John 17:17 when he said
John 17:17 "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."
If man is to come to a proper understanding of religious truth it will only
be accomplished through a study of God's holy and divine word. This is why we
must preach the truth. This is why we must encourage all people to seek, love,
and obey the truth.
Today, we believe that there are people in our viewing audience who are genuinely
searching for the truth. As followers of Jesus Christ it is our desire to reach
out to all men with the truth. Therefore, the things that we present on this
program are not rooted in the ideas and opinions of men.
Friends, I want our listeners to know that I am not a protestant. The Church of Christ did not come out of the protestant, reformation movement. The church of Christ did not come out of Catholicism. The church of Christ did not come into existence by the will of man. The Church of Christ is the original church. It is the church that you read about in the Bible.
-It is the church that Jesus promised to build in Matthew 16:18, where he said,
"upon this rock I will build My church."
-It is the church that Jesus poured out his precious blood in order to purchase
according to Acts 20:28.
-It is the church that came into existence on the day of Pentecost in AD 33,
according to Acts chapter 2.
-It is the church that Christ himself now rules over from Heaven, for according
to Ephesisns 5:23 "Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of
the body."
Yes, it was the church of Christ and not the Catholic church that Jesus established. It is the church of Christ that you're reading about every time you open your bible. That's why you don't read about things like absolution, purgatory, indulgences, auricular confession, or popes in the Bible. There are no such things in the Bible because there were no such things in the original, first century church. And today, the true church still stands for the very same things the original church stood for, nothing more and nothing less.
Unfortunately, arrogant and ungodly men refused to leave the church alone. They were not content with the doctrines that were left by Christ and his apostles. And so they took it upon themselves pervert and alter the doctrines that were set in place by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Just as Paul prophesied, false teachers arose from within the Church of Christ, and they began to speak false doctrine.
Notice Paul's pleading as he warned the elders of the Church of Christ at Ephesus.
In Acts 20:30-31 he said
"Acts 20:30-31. "Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking
perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves." "Therefore
watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night
and day with tears.
Also notice what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 11:13
2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
Yes, even in Paul's day, there were false apostles at work in the Church of Christ. The church that Jesus and his apostles established was infiltrated by false teachers and false apostles, and in the centuries that followed, these men, and others like them perverted the truth and led the church into apostasy. And today, many, many people fail to realize that the apostate church is still with us in the form of Catholicism.
Friend, if you haven't gotten anything else out of this study please remember this one thing, Catholicism is not the original church It is not the church that you read about in the Bible, for it did not come into existence until centuries later, through the great apostasy.
The one true church, as spoken of in Scripture, is the church that submits
itself to God's word. Jesus said, "if you abide in my word, you are my
disciples indeed." Today, based on the word of God, we are convinced that
the church of Christ is that church. It is our desire and our prayer that all
men would come to know this great Bible truth.
